Assistant Superintendent

Dear Danbury Public School Community,

Kevin L. Walston

Welcome to another new school year!  The excitement is building for the 2018-19 school year, which promises to be a great one.  It’s my pleasure to share how honored and enthusiastic I am to serve as your new Assistant Superintendent of School & District Development.

Danbury is a very well respected and friendly city and I am happy to call it my new home. In July when I arrived, I quickly learned that the tradition of excellence that exists within DPS is due in large part to the wonderful people of this community and the diligent and dedicated work of our students and staff.‚Äč

I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself and my family. First and foremost, I am a father.  I have two beautiful children—a daughter who is 20 and a 15-year-old son.  My son is approaching his second year in high school and my daughter begins her junior year of college this fall…how time flies!  And, I can’t forget Jax, my four-year-old boxer who is a very important part of our family.  I was born and raised in the Bronx, NY and I am a product of the NYC public school system.  Previously, I lived in Connecticut for nine years and have returned to the area after nearly three years in New Jersey as an Assistant Superintendent of Administration.  My career in education began after earning my Bachelor of Arts degree in Black Studies from Herbert H. Lehman College and a Master of Education in School Administration & Supervision and Professional Diploma in School District Administration from the College of New Rochelle. My educational certifications include a CT 092 Administrator Certification and a CT  Superintendent of Schools (093) Certification.

I have served in education for over twenty years in leadership roles that include HS Social Studies Teacher, Special Education Teacher, Dean of Students, Football Coach, HS Assistant Principal, HS Turnaround Principal, and, Director of Schools and Assistant Superintendent.  As evidenced, the majority of my educational experiences lie in school and district administration.

The District has made a commitment to this community through its mission statement to help our children achieve productive and self-fulfilling lives, which I intend to work towards on a daily basis as an integral part of the team.  Here’s what I can promise to you as your Assistant Superintendent: 1) I will serve as a champion for all students to increase access to rigorous coursework; 2) I will work passionately to decrease opportunity gaps for all students; 3) I will endeavor to promote a reflective and action-oriented professional learning community; 4) I will maintain and help grow a rigorous teaching and learning environment for all students; and, 5) I will encourage a culture that provides every family with a sense of belonging through intentional strategies that help students grow and develop intellectually, emotionally and socially.  Every student matters.

I am genuinely excited to serve as your new Assistant Superintendent and look forward to our work together in the coming year.

Sincerely,

Kevin L. Walston
